Poems in other languages are not translated, so it is a poly-lingual book, including poems in Norwegian, Swedish, and Portuguese. Beside each portrait of a poet is a sampling of the subject’s poetry. It’s a little bit different from the first Birds in Beards, mainly in that it is not just a coloring book, but also a poetry anthology. This coloring book includes silly portraits of Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, Rumi, Gustaf Fröding, Christina Rossetti, Edgar Allan Poe, and many more. The long awaited sequel to the Birds in Beards Coloring Book, Birds in Beards 2: Dead Poets Edition embodies the same whimsical ideas of the first book, but this time, Marohn drew famous dead poets. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Bird Watch by Jane YolenThe cardinal, "a brilliant blot/on winter's page," is indeed a bold red on the upper left of two stark, snowy pages. The birds are beautifully, vibrantly, and realistically portrayed in Lewin's watercolor paintings that perfectly match the words of the poems. Sometimes the images will cause readers to stop and then break into laughter, as when a woodpecker's ratatat is described as "as cleansing as a dentist's probe/ in a mouthful of cavities." There is a poignancy in "Nestlings," which states that, "All babies/ are born/ ugly/ and unfinished./ But today/I found a nest with/ three/ baby/ robins/ and they were/ beautiful/ because they were mine." Each double-page spread contains a single poem and corresponding picture. Yolen's startling descriptions almost jump off the page, reminding readers of what they may have watched but never truly saw. But this is not, in any way, a preachy book. Grade 2 Up- Yolen and Lewin have combined verbal and visual images in an expression of reverence for and joy in our feathered friends. When she refuses and escapes, there are a number of supernatural events involving a giant knight, multiple marriage proposals and multiple deaths, eventually concluding with Manfred's abdication and Isabella's marriage to her savior. The story follows the prince of Otranto, Manfred, who is trying to avoid an ancient prophecy pervading his castle: the leadership "should pass from the present family, whenever the real owner should be grown too large to inhabit it." It opens with his son's death in which he is crushed by a giant helmet, leading to Manfred's decision to wed Isabella, who was going to be his future daughter-in-law. This framed narration is similar to the novel itself, which presents the story as an analysis of a cryptic manuscript from the time of the Crusades (1095-1291) that is in the process of translation. The grainy black and white frames of the archeological discovery starkly contrasts the vibrant cut-out, stop-motion animation of the abridged story-telling. Švankmajer's 1977 pseudo-documentary follows an amateur archaeologist and his exploration of the setting of Otranto Castle, which he claims is actually based on a castle in Czechoslovakia and not Italy like the novel suggests. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Ozma of oz 1907On some level, I was reminded of the story of Inanna and the gifts of civilzation. Through this story we hear how pride, power, vanity, & hierarchy out of whack creates difficulty or us on the path. This third book is about the way role and masks make us unconscious to our powerful selves. Dorothy is dunked as woman and re-awakens to her magical witch self, perhaps to herself in the role as the Witch of the East, forgotten during her exile from Oz. When she returns, Dorothy is dunked in water, which is a punishment inflicted on woman and used as a way to identify witches. She was exiled from the magical world of Oz. When Dorothy left Oz she lost the Silver Slippers that she would have needed to return by choice. Whereas in the first book, Dorothy arrives through the element of Air, this time she arrives through the element of Water. A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM ALEX GARLAND, STARRING NATALIE PORTMAN AND OSCAR ISAAC 5/24/2023 0 Comments UNIT by Jemma RedgraveSteven Moffat may return to Doctor Who as a writer When you’ve got the backing of Disney, the world is your oyster and anything is possible. Davies has said time and time again that he is all about making additional shows and turning Doctor Who into a major franchise. With their resources, they could easily expand the “Whoniverse,” starting with the UNIT spinoff series. (I cannot wait!)Īll this exciting news comes on the heels of Disney buying the rights to Doctor Who. And don’t forget, David Tennant and Catherine Tate will also be in three 60th-anniversary specials. We know that Redgrave could show up in the Doctor Who Christmas special later this year alongside Ncuti Gatwa, our new Doctor. This man brought the franchise back to life and may be poised to do it again! UNIT is a military research organization which has been a central part of Doctor Who for many years.Īccording to Deadline, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies said the spinoff is “one of the gretest things I’ve ever made in my life.” And we remind you that this is the guy who served as showrunner on Doctor Who when it was revived in 2005, through to the end of David Tennant’s run as the Tenth Doctor. It will feature Jemma Redgrave, who played Kate Stewart, Head of Scientific Research at UNIT in the original series. The Doctor Who universe, aka the “Whoniverse,” continues to expand as BBC sources confirm a spinoff in the works. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Brazen and the beast sarah macleanAnd we both live in a world that judges us for all of those qualities. I never had any trouble understanding her-we both have big bodies, big personalities, and we don’t do much in half-measures. SM: Honestly, Hattie came to me nearly fully formed. How did you find your way into her story? Is there a particular scene that you feel encompasses who she is as a person, and what is your favourite thing about that scene? This book taught me that I could still write with fearlessness and the result, I hope, is a book that is, as Max Perkins liked to say, “alive from beginning to end.”ĪC: Hattie is a plus-size heroine, one of a still very small number in romance novels. With Brazen, I set out to write a book that navigated through those sticky places-to write the characters, the plot, the conflict, the sex-all as fearlessly as possible. When you start out writing, no one tells you that the craft gets more and more challenging-of course it does!-you learn to predict mistakes and pitfalls and challenges, and your instinct is to listen to those predictions and navigate around them. Throughout the book Reese tells childhood stories and describes how strong southern women - especially her Grandmother - have influenced her, making her the person she is today. I’ve lived in Michigan for most of my life so all I really know about the south is my experience from a few trips I have taken to Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina - and from religiously reading Southern Living every month for the past 10 years (the only magazine I cannot live without). The minute you open this book you realize it is more than just a book to cook from. The photographs are breathtaking and the stories are heartwarming. Whiskey in a Teacup is more than a cookbook, it is a memoir filled with family, food, and all things southern like monograms, biscuits, hot rollers, wallpaper and quilts.
